Materials
With all of the choices available today MPS have put together a brief guide to help make
sure that you choose the right style of worktop for your environment.
Melamine faced chipboard (MFC)
Solid grade laminate (SGL)
SGL (also referred to as Compact Grade
Laminate or as “Trespa” which is a trade
name) has a solid core built up from
multiple layers of resin-impregnated high
quality kraft papers to thicknesses between
2mm and 20mm. It is suitable for use in
both wet and dry areas making it a great
choice for science and washrooms.
The vast majority of office furniture is
manufactured with this material. MFC is
usually of a wood grain, which is repeatedly
printed onto a Melamine film, and heat
processed onto chipboard. MFC is a budget
alternative to High Pressure Laminate table
tops only suitable for I.T. benching.
Laminate faced chipboard
Corian
Typically used on kitchen worktops and
classroom tables, in different grades. Usually
referred to as a laminate top
and bonded to either MDF board or
chipboard. The layer of laminate is adhered
to the substrate (the board) under high
pressure. It is very resilient to knocks and
abrasions, is very hygienic.
Laminate faced MDF
Corian solid surface offers design versatility,
functionality and durability. Corian solid
surface is a solid, nonporous, homogeneous
surfacing material, composed of about 1/3
acrylic resin and 2/3 natural materials which
together creates a very tough material.
Melamine faced MDF (MFMDF)
Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) is a
particleboard made from composite wood.
MDF is made from wood waste (specifically the
fibres) and glued together using either heat,
resin or pressure. Characteristics include being
quite smooth meaning it can be used as a
natural exposed edge for tables when polished
and finished.
